Big Lake Country communities

Behchoko

Behchoko is the largest Tlicho community and headquarters for the Tlicho government. Excellent craftwork, including beaded moccasins and moosehair tuftings are available here. Located just 19 kilometres from Highway 3, the two communities of Behchoko, Rae and Edzo, can be reached by charter air services and by bus from Yellowknife. Rae has a restaurant and general store.

Gameti

Gameti ("place for game") a traditional community about halfway between Great Slave and Great Bear lakes, Gameti (formerly Rae Lakes) is accessible by road only in winter. There's year-round air service from Yellowknife, a hotel, restaurant and general store. Local outfitters and guides offer a choice of wilderness adventures.

Wekweeti

Wekweeti ("rock lake") This Tlicho community (formerly Snare Lake) is 195 air miles north of Yellowknife. There's scheduled air service from the NWT capital, plus a hotel, restaurant and general store. You can book a variety of wilderness trips with local outfitters and guides.

Whati

Whati ("marten lake") This traditional Tlicho community is accessible by scheduled flights, and by a winter road connecting to the Mackenzie Highway. There's a small hotel, a restaurant and general store. Ask local outfitters about fishing trips and boating tours of Lac La Martre.
