Adventures on the North's ice roads
Winter travel takes on new excitement when you drive our Northwest Territories ice roads. They really are made of ice in places – up to a metre, or a yard, thick. Built across tundra, lakes and rivers, they provide links to our remote, off-highway communities for a few weeks each winter. Northerners travel ice roads by car and truck, dogteam and snowmobile, to connect with friends, family and business interests. Our outfitters will take you on a winter road tour, or you can rent a vehicle and plan your own ice road trip. Before you travel our winter roads, be sure you're well prepared with cold-weather gear and emergency supplies.
For up-to-date information about highway conditions, ice roads and ice-bridge crossings be sure to check with the NWT Department of Transportation.
