Hunting records and regions

Hunting records

When you hunt our undisturbed wilderness, you're in prime trophy territory.

The World Record Central Canada Barren Ground Caribou was taken at Humphy Lake, NWT in 1994. Countless other record-book entries have originated in the NWT's hunting regions - from Muskox in the Western Arctic to species like Dall's Sheep and Woodland Caribou in the Mackenzie Mountains. The largest horns on record from a Dall's Sheep measure more than 125 cm in circumference.

Hunting seasons

Hunting expeditions go on virtually year-round in the Northwest Territories. Regulated seasons vary by species and geographic area. Polar bears are hunted on the Arctic ice from mid-February to late April. Tundra grizzlies may be hunted in late fall or in April and May. Muskox are often hunted on the Arctic Barrens in early spring, by snowmobile. Caribou are hunted in the fall. Check with our expert outfitters to find out when to come in search of your own sport hunting dream.

Hunting regions of the NWT

The Mackenzie Mountains

Hunt this spectacular, challenging wilderness for Dall's Sheep, Mountain Caribou, and huge Alaska/Yukon Moose. The region produces record-book heads every year. There are many different types of hunts to choose from: backpack, horseback, or river raft. All of them begin with an eye-opening charter flight to your lodge or outfitter's camp, deep in the mountain ranges.

The Western Arctic

Reaching from the Mackenzie Delta to Banks and Victoria Islands, and along the mainland coast, this is the real Arctic, frozen most of the year. It's excellent habitat for Caribou, Muskox, and the king of all trophies, the Polar Bear.

Test your outdoor skills as you and your Inuvialuit guides explore a fascinating, forbidding land in pursuit of some of the world's most coveted trophies.

The Barrenlands

This open, rolling landscape north of the treeline is the remote setting for one of nature's great spectacles, the Barrenground Caribou migration. About a dozen outfitters are licensed to offer fully guided hunts on the vast Barrens. All work within exclusive hunting areas. Hunting camps and lodges are placed at strategic points along migration paths, offering each hunter exclusive, unique trophy opportunities. Many also offer chances to hunt Wolf, Wolverine, and small game.

The South Slave

In this region of Boreal forest and plains carved by turbulent rivers, you can take part in one of sport hunting's most unusual adventures. A Wood Bison safari here is a challenging experience, unlike any other Bison hunt in North America. You many also find opportunities to hunt small game and birds.
