Arriving by road

You can drive to the Northwest Territories from Alberta or British Columbia, Canada. In Alberta, pick up the Mackenzie Highway at Grimshaw, north of Edmonton. The Mackenzie Highway is paved all the way to Yellowknife – some 1500 road kilometers north of Edmonton.

Our highways are also accessible from Fort Nelson in northern British Columbia, where drivers have a choice of routes. One is a circle route through the southern Northwest Territories approaching the gateway to spectacular Nahanni National Park. The other choice is a longer trip, north through Yukon to Dawson City and up the Dempster Highway to Inuvik, a short hop from the Arctic Ocean!

For more information on driving in the Northwest Territories choose these links or select Parks and Campgrounds, above left.
