Steep
yourself in the North's colourful history
The history of the Northwest Territories is rich with stories of heroism and survival, and grand, bold adventures. Yet our land and waters look much as they did in the days when European explorers first visited the North. When you paddle a river or lake, you'll see the same undisturbed shores they saw, and travel the routes the First Nations have treasured since time immemorial.
Historical sites, churches and museums are visible and living monuments to our stories. Explore the story of northern missions. Fly out to Hershel Island to walk where the whalers wintered, a century ago. In Fort Simpson, explore the influence of the fur trade, and stand on grounds blessed by the Holy Father. From Deline, travel to heritage sites venerated by the Bear Lake people, and imagine wintering with Franklin almost 200 years ago.
Each year more of the north's history is preserved both in physical and in digital form. Visit the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in Yellowknife for a fascinating look at the story of northern peoples, or go on line at pwnhc.learnnet.nt.ca
