Sharing our land

In the New North, Aboriginal peoples are moving swiftly forward with Land Claims that give them ownership of certain lands within traditional territories. Furthermore, the people of each region have a voice on how all lands and waters within the Land Claim region will be used. In some cases this means that the people are co-operating with government agencies to create parks and heritage sites for the use of all Northerners and visitors. It may also mean that travel is restricted in certain areas. It's always a good idea to check before you set out on an outdoor adventure. The links on this page provide information about the Aboriginal groups and their traditional land use, as well as about some of the policies related to public access.
