Birds of the Northwest Territories
Birds from the east and west coasts and as far away as South America migrate to the Canadian North each spring to nest and raise their young. Northern birdwatching is legendary. At staging areas in the spring and fall, the northern sky fills with birds as a flock takes flight. Waterfowl - ducks, geese, swans and gulls - nest on every available pond and lake through the summer. Songbirds nestle in the tundra under foot. Birds of prey, including bald eagles, circle overhead. In all, birds of 41 families and over 200 bird species breed and stage in the Northwest Territories.
